The Rover P4 was built between the years 1949 and 1964. Regarding the styling the P4 was a giant leap to modernity compared to it's predecessor the Rover P3 which looked very nice but pretty old school. The first series of P4 cars were fitted with a remarkable item, an extra driving lamp in the center of the grille. This item was named 'Cyclops eye', by the public, and it was deleted in the year 1952. The first series of P4 car were fitted with the four and six cylinder engines carried over from the P3. These cars were also fitted with column shift which changed to a centrally floor mounted gear lever from 1954. Rover cars were quality products and with the P4 Rover had proven that again. Quality of build was superb and the engines were almost indestructible. The pressed steel bodywork was completed with many aluminium parts like the doors, the boot lid and the bonnet. The last models were given steel doors from the year 1960. Until 1959 all Rover P4 cars were fitted with drum brakes all round, from that year disc brakes at front were introduced.
The following Rover P4 models were build (unless otherwise stated the cars were fitted with six cylinder engines): the P4 75 (four and six cylinder models) from 1949, the P4 60 (four cylinder) from 1953, the P4 90 from 1953, the P4 75 Mk II (four cylinder) from 1954, the P4 105R and 105S from 1956, the P4 80 (four cylinder) from 1959, the P4 100 from 1960 and finally the P4 95 and 110 from 1962.
The Rover P4 interiors were trimmed very luxurious with full leather seats, wool carpet and a lot of wood all round the interior; all to the best British traditions.
The Rover P4 was not called this way by it's owners those days, P4 was a factory name. Owners spoke of their Rover 75 or Rover 90. Others nicknamed the car lovingly 'Auntie'.
