Information
The Triumph TR
7 was the successor of the Triumph TR 6. During it's last years of
production the TR 6 saw heavy competition of the modern Datsun 240 Z
sports coupe. Discussions about the safety of convertibles and
increasing safety legislations made the market position of convertibles
uncertain in the USA. Therefore the Triumph TR 7 was designed as a
coupe. The car was developed from scratch and nothing remembered of the
renown and rugged TR range which started with the Triumph TR 2. The TR 7
was presented in the year 1975. The TR 7 was given a very futuristic
shape and the car featured a unitary bodywork structure. The TR 7
convertible or spider was presented in the USA in the year 1979, in 1980
it became available for European buyers. The TR 7 was powered by a new
developed 1998 cc. four cylinder in-line engine producing 106 bhp. Until
the year 1976 a four speed gearbox was standard equipment. From that
year a 5-speed Rover gearbox became available. Between the years 1975
and 1981 a total of 86.784 TR 7 coupe models were built. Between 1979
and
1981 a total of 24.864 convertible / Spider models were built. By sales
numbers the TR 7 was the most successful Triumph TR ever! In the year
Triumph presented the Triumph TR 8. This was a TR 7 convertible / Spider
but fitted with the powerful and robust Rover 3500 V8 engine. The
Triumph TR 8 is relatively scarce, only 2497 specimen were built. Four cylinder
in-line engine Triumph TR 7 convertible / Spider, year 1980. Colour black with a black/grey interior and a black soft top. This TR 7 sports a period radio and a chrome luggage rack. |
