The Porsche 911/ 964 Carrera 4 (with four wheel drive) was presented in the year 1989 and the Carrera 2 (with rear wheel drive) in the year 1990. The Porsche 911/ 964 Carrera 2 & 4 model family is a further development of the Carrera 3.2 family. In base the cars are the same but the Carrera 2 & 4 family was refined and updated on many points to cope with higher safety standards and to obtain better aerodynamics.
The body was fitted with new bumpers which look like an integral part of the body. Lamp units are also integrated. The bumpers are made of a plastic which can deform to a certain extend without damage. The rear side was restyled and a mechanically operated rear spoiler was incorporated. The spoiler is combined with the grille and is just a grille when the aerodynamic spoiler function is not needed. At speeds over 80 km/h. the spoiler pops up to give additional stability to the car at high speeds. On the dashboard we find a switch to operate the spoiler whenever we want (nice gadget to show off with!)
The Porsche 911/964 interior is almost 100%  identical to the Carrera 3.2 litre cabin. Only the Carrera 4 shows a higher center section to house the four wheel drive transmission to the front wheels.
The Porsche 911/ 964 is powered by the famous Porsche "flat six" boxer engine. The cylinder capacity was enlarged to 3.6 liter where the Carrera 3.2 measured 3.2 Litre. The engine was fitted with two spark plugs per cylinder and the engine unit was coupled with a 5-speed gearbox. From 1990, with the introduction of the Carrera 2, an automatic/ pushbutton manual 5-speed "Tiptronic" gearbox became available.
The 911/ 964 was available in three body styles; a Coupe model, a Targa model and a Convertible. The Convertible became extremely popular and the Targa was hardly sold. Top of the line model was the exclusive 911/964 Carrera RS of which only 2282 were built. The Porsche 911/964 model was succeeded by the 911/993 model series in December 1993.
