Technical data
The Lancia Flaminia GTL was a special model based on the 1957 Lancia Flaminia Berlina. Other Flaminia specials were the Flaminia Zagato Sport and the Flaminia GT by Touring. From start of the production the Flaminia GTL was powered by a 2500 cc. six cylinder V- engine. Very soon the engine was upgraded to 2800 cc. and the Solex carburettor was exchanged by three double Weber carburettors (3C). The Touring models came with full aluminium bodywork and shared the advanced mechanics of the Flaminia family. The cars were fitted with Dion rear axle combined with the gearbox (Transaxle). A very expensive construction used to obtain the ideal weight balance between the the front and rear of the car. The Flaminia GT series was introduced to obtain better sales next to the successful Flavia Berlina. Lancia was struggling for a better financial situation but Lancia's technical obstinacy made the cars very expensive to build and to sell. Hard competition in the sportscar market did not help either so the advanced Lancia sportscars are relatively rare and some models are even very scarce in our modern days. Lancia Flaminia GT (L) Competitors on the sportscar market around the year 1960 were the Maserati 3500 GT, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, the Jaguar XK 150 and from 1964 also the Jaguar E-type. All the competitors were equipped with larger engines delivering more power. It is a shame
that the contemporary sportscar buyer did not understand the statement
Lancia made with the advanced Lancia Flaminia series. Lancia tried
hardest to get the most power from a compact and relatively light
aluminium V6 engine. Combined with the excellent roadholding
capabilities thanks to the Dion axle, the Transaxle gearbox, the
diskbrakes and the all independent suspension all round the Flaminia was
a born drivers car. Excellent skills of the driver are rewarded by the
car and the combination driver/ machine is good for gorgeous driving. V6 engine
